good reads

Have you discovered Good Reads??  I signed up for the website yesterday and downloaded the app before heading over to the library.  The app proved to be invaluable!
With Rose reading at a level far beyond that of a typical 6 year old, I'm running into the dilemma of trying to find books that are appropriate for her to read.  She reads at a level of 8-12 year olds and a lot of these books talk about subjects I don't want her to think about at this young age.  Such as, yesterday I went to the library and found a book that looked like it'd be right up Rose's alley called Ellie and the Bunheads.  It's about ballerinas and looked like a sweet little story.  I whipped out the app, scanned the book and had reviews right on the spot!!  One review pointed out that Ellie and the Bunheads talks A LOT about weight (loss and gain).  "Don't eat any junk... you know you don't want any pimples during your audition", "Suck in some of that hamburger, Ellie" and "If Ellie has to eat her mother's fat-free lasagna again, she's thinks she'll puke!" That is NOT something I was Rose to think about, so I am SO glad I had the heads up before I checked it out for her.

That got me thinking...  maybe I should read books before I let her read them?  What do you mothers think?

dwts dancer spotlight - brilynn rakes

Did you catch this dancer spotlight of Brilynn Rakes on DWTS?  I hope you can see this performance before DWTS cuts it off, as I'm sure they will for copyright infringement.  I wanted to show this video though because the one on the ABC website doesn't have the introduction that talks about Brilynn.

Brilynn is an incredible and the fact that she has accomplished this while being legally blind is amazing.  Such an inspiration.  While we were watching this, Jordan said that it's not the journey that makes you strong, it's the resistance.  That's so true.  I hope this girl is able to have all her dreams come true.

Brilynn is the cutest girl and so sweet.  She is an incredible dancer.  And she gets to dance with Derek, my fave.

Enjoy!

in training

Basil is such a sweet dog and good with Rose.  Yesterday Rose decided to take Basil out for a training session.  He came to us trained but we've been able to correct some minor behavioral issues.  He's incredibly intelligent and learns easily.  Just like our Goose!  :)

This is the look of a serious trainer.

We've really grown attached to this pup.  We're so glad he found us.  I've never bonded to a dog like this before.  I think it's because he needed us as much as we wanted him.  He loves us; t's so fun.  I swear, he's the type of dog that would save your life, if it came down to that.  You can tell that he understands life with his big knowing eyes.  Or as Rose says, he looks at us exaggeratingly.  :)

Today we took Basil to the vet to be neutered.  I explained to Rose in very simple terms about what that means and that that is how boys help make babies.   Her mind was blown!  Rose requested to see the testicles after they were removed. so they saved them for us.  When we got home Rose's friend, Katie, was outside and Rose yelled across the neighborhood, "We just got our dog back from the vet!  He had his testicles removed!  Do you know what testicles are?!  That is how boys help make babies!"  Katie responded, "Oh yeah!"

I hope that Katie's mom doesn't give us the skunk eye next time we see her.

little gems

I love finding little snippets that Rose has taken.  I was going through my pictures this morning and found this one from August of 2011.  Rose was 4.
