the fourth watch and bringing up bebe

I often listen to books, talks, and podcasts as I'm getting things done around the house.  It helps the monotony of these tasks seem bearable and makes the time pass quickly, especially laundry.  Here are some that I've listened to lately.

*  The Fourth Watch by S. Michael Wilcox
He talks about what to do when your prayers seem unanswered, why they may be unanswered, and how to hold fast to your faith.  I definitely recommend this book to anyone.  The Fourth Watch reminds us that there is a reason for everything, even unanswered prayers.
One of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Ye cannot in your present state understand eternity...That is what mortals misunderstand.  They say of some temporal suffering, "No future bliss can make up for it," not knowing that Heaven, once attained, will work backwards and turn even that agony into a glory.  and of some sinful pleasure they say "Let me have but this and I'll take the consequences": little dreaming how damnation will spread back and back into their past and contaminate the pleasure of the sin.  Bothe processes begin even before death.  The good man's past begins to change so that his forgiven sins and remembered sorrows take on the quality of Heaven: the bad man's past already conforms to his badness and is filled only with dreariness.  And that of why...the Blessed will say "We have never lived anywhere except in Heaven, : and the Lost, "We were always in Hell."  And both will speak truly."
- C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce

I love S. Michael Wilcox.  He has a tender way of speaking that brings with it clarity and the Spirit.  See also, Daughters of God:  Scriptural Portraits

*  Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting by Patricia Drunkerman   Here is a link to the audio version.
I LOVED this book, so much so that I listened to it twice in a row.

Want your baby to sleep through the night starting in his/her infancy?  Want your child to respect your authority?  Want your child to eat his/her veggies with ease?  Patricia Drunkerman can tell you how to make this happen.  It's in the French mindset that children should be well-behaved, respectful, and have self-control and they have handy tricks to ensure that happens.

While we, in America, seem to review different parenting styles to choose which one suits us best, I loved hearing about a "parenting style" that is part of a long standing culture and seems to be second nature to the locals.  I enjoyed it so much because I identified with what she had to say.  It was almost validating to me to discover that my style of raising Rose is very much French.  My French ancestors would be so proud!   It's interesting to hear Patricia's point-of-view because she seems unbiased.  She's is an American who married an Englishman and is raising her family in Paris.  She's not even sure if she likes living in Paris.

Happy Sabbath!
